هذا الكتاب يضم في طياته سبعة مقالات، تتناول مسألة الحداثة في الأدب الفلسطيني في إسرائيل، بعضها ثمرة مؤتمر عقد في المعهد الأكاديمي العربي للتربية (مركز أبحاث اللغة، الثقافة والمجتمع العربي)، بالإشتراك مع قسم اللغة العربية في الجامعة العبرية، ومركز نحميا ليفتسيون للأبحاث الإسلامية، والبعض الآخر بمثابة دراسات علمية حول هذا الموضوع، قد أضفناها إلى الكتاب: نشير بأن هذه الدراسات قد توزعت في محاور لأجناس أدبية مختلفة في الأدب العربي الحديث.

הספר מוקדש לזכרו של פרופ' נחמיה לבציון (1935–2003), שהיה מעמודי התווך של חקר המזרח התיכון, האסלאם ואפריקה. בעבודתו רחבת היריעה והבין-תחומית שילב פרופ' לבציון גם בין מתודות מחקר מגוונות ובין מבטים פרטיקולריים, אוניברסליים ומשווים. מנעד מחקרי ומתודי זה בא לידי ביטוי בקובץ זה, המבוסס על הרצאות שנישאו בכנס השנתי של החברה המזרחית הישראלית שהתקיים במכון ון ליר בירושלים.

"This book developed from an international workshop titled 'Facing Modernity: Rethinking ʿUlamaʾ in the Middle East', conducted at the Hebrew University on 26-27 June 2006. The workshop was organized by the Nehemia Levtzion Center for Islamic Studies at the Hebrew University which, since its establishment in 2005, has gained growing recognition in both the Israeli and international academic communities."

This second volume of studies by the late Nehemia Levtzion pursues the themes covered in his previous collection, Islam in West Africa; it also maintains a particular interest in the history of Africa while including broader chronological and geographic perspectives. It includes four new papers, delivered by the author in the years before his death, specially prepared for publication in this volume. In the first part, there is an emphasis on processes of conversion and Islamization, but the studies also cover Islamic perceptions of and presence in Africa; the second focuses on Islamic movements of revival and renewal, Sufism and fundamentalism.

On 10-11 December 2006, the European Forum in cooperation with the Nehemia Levtzion Center for Islamic Studies at the Hebrew University, and with the support of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, held an international conference on “Islam in Europe: Eurabia or European Islam”. This publication is the outcome of that conference.

This collective volume, in honor of Aharon Layish, deals with the main components in the laws of Islamic societies, past and present: sharīʿa, custom, and statute. Some chapters focus on one of these components, other discuss the interplay between two or even all three of them.

The geographical coverage of the volume is wide, from the Balkans to Yemen, and from Iraq to the Maghrib. The chapters are based on a variety of sources: fiqh literature, fatwās, court decisions, judicial circulars, biographical dictionaries and chronics.

The volume will be of special interest to historians, social scientists and lawyers working on Islamic and Israeli laws, and to those interested in gender studies, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Islamic cultures at large.
